Amazon Buys MGM Including Stargate

Online megastore Amazon.com is going to purchase MGM for nearly $9 billion dollars according to the famed movie studio. The indebted studio has had financial troubles for at least a decade, and that debt is being acquired by the online giant in a move to expand it’s own library of movie and television content.

As we all know, Amazon has been building it’s own streaming service for some time. It needs content, and MGM has content. This will undoubtedly lead to new Stargate content being produced, but in what form is yet to be seen. All we know is what Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said “… with the talent at Amazon and the talent at MGM Studio, we can reimagine and develop that IP for the 21st century.”

While we here at Stargate Legacy are always excited to see forward movement with Stargate, the failure of Stargate Origins must be a cautionary tail for whoever gets tasked with producing new Stargate material. Stargate fans typically don’t want just anything new. Unlike other properties, Stargate has a fanbase that knows what it likes and knows what it doesn’t like.
