Why The New Stargate Movie Is a GOOD Thing

Editor’s note: The Stargate movie reboot is currently in hiatus or not happening at all.

A reboot of the Stargate movie has been rumored for months, but MGM’s recent announcement of Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich returning to the franchise confirms the future of Stargate on the big screen. Despite the fact that this project will prevent any SG-1/Atlantis/Universe spinoffs, it is still good news for fans of the Stargate franchise.

MGM shelved the last Stargate television project over 3 years ago with SG:U in 2011, and since then there has been no indication that they would release any new series’ or direct to DVD movies. Without the big screen trilogy, the Stargate franchise might not receive any attention from MGM for years! However, after the new movies are released we could see an entirely new generation of television shows.

For fans of SG-1/Atlantis/Universe who don’t appreciate the original movie this is probably bittersweet news. Any future shows would come after the trilogy finishes on the big screen. By our estimates that would not be until the year 2020 assuming the first film comes out May 2017 and there is an 18 month release cycle for the second and third films. By this time we would probably not see a rekindling of the story lines from the three series’, but rather something entirely new.

One thing that can not be argued is that if properly orchestrated, a new movie trilogy has the power to bring NEW fans to the franchise. With an all new fan base MGM might just surprise us with something unexpected.
