MGM has officially announced a new Stargate series, and a dedicated digital platform for the franchise.
The series is going to be distributed online exclusively through MGM’s new Stargate Command platform, and will be comprised of 10 episodes, each running 10 minutes. The episodes will tell the story of Stargate character Catherine Langford. Fans will note that the Catherine Langford character appeared in both the 1994 feature film and Stargate SG-1. The series is likely to explore the early days of the character, well before the events of SG1.
The series will begin filming this August, with pre-production happening now. MGM is anticipating having the new episodes wrapped up and released later this year. In a teaser trailer for the new series, MGM shows a series of clips from the 1994 feature film showing Catherine Langford as a child.
In addition to the series, MGM will be launching a new Stargate Command website. From their official press release they describe what will be available on the new site:
Stargate Command will provide new and existing fans exclusive access to a variety of Stargate assets and content from the franchise’s nearly 25-year history. At the core of the experience for subscribers will be the most comprehensive collection of Stargate content ever offered in one place, an unparalleled community experience, and behind-the-scenes look at the first new Stargate production in years – Stargate Origins. More details for Stargate Command will be available in the coming weeks and the new Stargate fan experience will launch this fall.
In the official Stargate panel at SDCC, MGM’s Kevin Conroy said “We’ve been eager to revisit the Stargate franchise, and create an all-new story that honors the founding mythos and gives loyal fans more mystery and adventure. We view Stargate Origins as a thank you to fans who have been keeping the spirit of the franchise alive for nearly 25 years. With the increasing popularity of digitally native content that can be streamed to any device, MGM is committed to the production of premium linear mid-form content and are proud to launch with Stargate Origins.”
